Vitamin D

Beyond bone health, sufficient exposure to vitamin D - through sun exposure, food and dietary supplements - is essential to strengthen the immune system and maintain general health for optimum wellness.

Low  levels can be due to a Vitamin D deficiency, which can result from:

  • Lack of exposure to sunlight
  • Lack of enough vitamin D in the diet
  • Liver and kidney diseases
  • Poor food absorption
  • Use of certain medicines

Vitamin D deficiency causes:

+  bone-weakening diseases such as osteoporosis in adults and rickets in

+   increased risk of cancer, diabetes and several cardiovascular or

      autoimmune diseases.

Serum levels of 25-OH Vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D) are important in establishing true vitamin D levels in humans.

In the kidney, 25-OH Vitamin D changes into an active form of the vitamin. The active form of vitamin D helps control calcium and phosphate levels in the body.

The 25-OH Vitamin D test is the most accurate way to measure how much vitamin D is in the body.

Vitamin D blood test is also important for:

o men on androgen or hormone deprivation treatment for prostate cancer

o women being treated for breast cancer

The 25-OH Vitamin D test is now available at CLINIPATH

Reporting of the result is within 24 hours
